BALLOON | Trash Bags Without Worries

2014-2016

One winter in Paris, I saw a homeless man shielding himself from the cold, wrapped inside a garbage bag. A black bag that contains warmth can transform into a balloon, allowing for a brief escape from the ‘weight of being discarded.’
This work consists of transforming one or more garbage bags into flying objects. The reference to the balloon is not so much in shape or color, but in the fact that they ‘fly.’ The bag is no longer on the ground, filled with waste, but floats in the air like a balloon.
Inspired by the sight of a homeless person protecting himself from the harsh winter, the work explores the fragile possibility of escape, warmth, and poetic elevation—a reminder that even in overlooked or discarded forms, there can be moments of lightness and resilience.
